Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation is pleased to present a series of conversations and workshops exploring the theme of experimentation and challenging conventional approaches to learning. Each of these artists are actively pushing the boundaries of how an artist “should” use material, experimenting with self-defined modes of working, and creating innovative new art forms. Artists featured: Kelly Akashi, Yassi Mazandi, and Leela Cyd.

Join us for a conversation with critically acclaimed artist Kelly Akashi and Frederick Janka, Executive Director, on Saturday, September 22, for the Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation fall podcast series Learning the Wrong Way. The conversation is free and open to the public. Los Angeles based Kelly Akashi has become known for critically acclaimed installations in the 2016 Made in L.A. Biennial at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, and her widely celebrated 2017 solo exhibition Long Exposure at SculptureCenter in New York. Akashi frequently incorporates handmade candles, often formed while wrapped on her own arms, in her dynamic installations. Seamlessly moving between, and overlapping, wax, bronze, glass, photography and film, Akashi celebrates energetic and alchemical transformations of material. Join us for a unique opportunity to meet the artist and learn first hand how to make your own inspired candle art.

Immediately following the conversation, ticketed guests will join the artist for an intimate chef’s dinner.

On Sunday, September 23, Kelly Akashi will lead an introductory candle making workshops at Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation. Participants will leave with handmade candles of their own design.

Reduced participation fees and scholarships are available to youth, current students, as well as professional artists based in Ojai.
