Sending our best wishes to you this Holiday Season! At the Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation, during these unprecedented times we have continued to support and advocate for artists. We ask that you help us continue to serve artists by supporting the Ojai Institute Future Fund. This can be through a gift of appreciated stock, a monetary gift (matched up to $10,000), or by joining or renewing your Ojai Institute Membership.
This year, in spite of every obstacle, we expanded our digital reach and fundraising by taking the Ojai Institute online (www.theojaiinstitute.org) with a dedicated website and virtual event programs, including the very popular #TravelWithArtists and our Ojai Institute podcast conversations with artists Jonathan Herrera Soto, Cole M James, Porfirio Gutiérrez and Janna Ireland, among others. We also partnered with LUM Art Zine, a new arts journal covering the Central Coast, on The Photo Project to raise funds for artists and non-profits we should all be supporting and care about.
We created free art experiences while keeping social-distancing in mind and commissioned new work for the exterior of our gallery space with installations viewable from outside, including works by Muna Malik and Cole Sternberg. Sternberg’s project, Year One, is currently on view through the end of the year. We launched our Ojai Institute Family Art Experience Kits in November as renewed stay at home orders were on the horizon and the need for youth and families to safely engage with free art and the outdoors became even more heightened. Additional kits will accompany our exhibition projects in the New Year. We are thrilled to continue into our second year of a decade-long engagement with Kelly Akashi, whose compelling sculpture series of her hand cast in bronze will be on view until 2019. Each year a new piece in the series is introduced, while the previous year builds on the artist’s personal archive.
It was a huge loss, both financially, and for morale, to not be able to bring our friends and supporters together for our annual Artist & Ideas Festival and Art Prize Gala. Thanks to supporters like you, we still made every effort to successfully award our Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation Art Prize to Tanya Aguiñiga and our Minnesota Prize to Dyani White Hawk. Both artists, along with Muna Malik were featured in our partnership with Plan Your Vote, hailed as the biggest cultural initiative in the civic sphere since 2008, with over 130 arts institutions and 70 artists encouraging voter participation across the country.
As we wrap up 2020 we look forward to new commissions including an exhibition with Janna Ireland opening January 8, 2021, and projects with both 2020 art prize recipients. Our 2021 iteration of the Artist & Ideas Festival will be in partnership with the Atkinson Gallery at Santa Barbara City College and The Mixteco/Indígena Community Organizing Project (MICOP). With the support of the Getty Foundation, this free public symposium will explore the intersection of indigenous knowledge and contemporary art and craft in Southern California.
Join us in our continued support and advocacy for artists in the coming year by making a contribution to the Ojai Institute Future Fund!
Appreciated Stock – Did you know that by donating stock that has appreciated for more than a year, you are actually giving 20 percent more than if you sold the stock and then made a cash donation?! When you donate the stock directly to a charity, there’s no capital gains tax to pay. Please speak with your financial professional to see if this is appropriate for you.
$10,000 match – This year, your donation will go even further: make a gift in any amount and your gift will be matched up to $10,000, thanks to our generous Board.
Join or renew your membership – starting at $100 per person, there are many ways to be a member of the Ojai Institute and support this platform for lifelong learning that values artists as catalysts for transformative change. Visit (www.cgbfoundation.org/membership).
Other ways to give and support include visiting the Ojai Institute Online (www.theojaiinstitute.org) and purchasing unique merchandise or artwork for yourself or as a gift, and remember buying art saves lives. We look forward to sharing a brighter year ahead!
