Annual Ojai Student Art Exhibition
Exhibition Dates: Saturday, October 6 – Sunday, October 28, 2018

The goal of this free program is to educate student artists in the process of exhibiting their artwork as a professional artist. This program is open to all students living in the Ojai Valley in grades 9 – 12 or similar age group.

Each student artist receives coaching lead by Frederick Janka, Executive Director, on how to present artworks as a cohesive presentation of their own artwork. They will learn write an artist’s statement, help promote their exhibition, attend the opening reception, and be prepared to discuss their work.

In addition, each exhibiting student artist will receive a $100 grant for art supplies, and participate in an optional day trip to Los Angeles with a family member to receive a special tour of the Marciano Art Foundation.

This program is supported by part by the Haskell Fund, and Keri Starbuck.

We strongly believe in the important role of artists as cultural producers and integral elements of our society.  We are creating a platform for contemporary art and culture in the Ojai Valley that values artists as catalysts for lifelong learning, while highlighting the importance of the arts and sciences. Help us continue to provide support and opportunities for artists, as well as a place for engaging with the community, sharing ideas, and learning first hand from living artists of our time.

We are thrilled to announce that due to the generosity of our dear supporter Carl Stibolt and an Anonymous donor we have been offered the exciting challenge of matching their $25,000 through gifts of any amount from our community. We are also grateful to Corinne Bordeau & Andy Koski for their lead gift of $2,000.

Funds raised will support our fall and winter programs. Highlights include our podcast conversation and workshop series on Learning the Wrong Way with Kelly Akashi, Leela Cyd, and Yassi Mazandi and the Ojai Valley Student Artist Exhibition Program and Workshop. Funds will also support our fall Artist in Residence Yassi Mazandi and a tour de force exhibition and site-specific installation, all of which will take us into the New Year.

November 3, 2018 – February 19, 2019 – Extended!

Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation is pleased to announce a new exhibition project with Yassi Mazandi, our next Artist in Residence. One of the highlights of our fall program, Yassi Mazandi in Residence is curated by Frederick Janka, Executive Director, and will feature a selection of recent ceramic sculptures by the Iranian born and Los Angeles based artist. A new collection of works on paper will also be created on site as part of her residency and in partnership with the Turtle Conservancy. This will be the artist’s first institutional solo exhibition on the West Coast and promises to be a tour de force.

Conversation with the Artist and Frederick Janka, Executive Director. Free and Open to the Public. Followed by a hosted reception

Artist Dinner: Saturday, November 3, 2018, 8:00 pm
Ticketed dinner celebrating the artist, $100 per person.

Workshop: Sunday, November 4, 2018, 11:00 am
Ceramics Workshop with Yassi Mazandi at Firestick Pottery, $250 per person, includes a light lunch.

The innovative strategies in Yassi’s studio practice have also inspired our programatic theme this fall of Learning the Wrong Way. As an artist that is constantly experimenting and challenging conventional approaches to learning, Yassi actively pushes the boundaries of how an artist should use material. For example, experimenting with self-defined modes of working with ceramics have led the artist to use paper porcelain to make amorphous and bulbous wheel-thrown pods. She has also developed an intuitive technique of hand carving clay over many weeks to produce intricate and otherworldly forms. Both examples of her technique will be featured in her exhibition.

Brian Calvin is a painter who lives and works in Ojai, California. He received his MFA from the School of The Art Institute of Chicago, and has been included in numerous exhibitions at galleries and institutions worldwide. Recent solo institutional exhibitions include Così fan tutte for the Gallery Met at the Met Opera in New York (2018); End of Messages at Le Consortium, Dijon, France, and Mu.ZEE, Osten, Belgium (2015). He was featured in the seminal 2002 painting exhibition Dear Painter, paint me, curated by Alison Gingeras, at Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna, Austria; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, France, and Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt am Main, Germany. His work has also been included in exhibitions at MOCA The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach; Seattle Art Museum, Seattle; MCA San Diego, San Diego; Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Oslo, Norway; PLATEAU, Samsung Museum of Art, Seoul, Korea; CAPC Museé d’art Contemporain de Bordeaux, Bordeaux, France, and Tate St Ives, St Ives, among many others.

Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation Art Prize 2018: Ry Rocklen

Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation is pleased to announce the 2018 Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation Art Prize winner, Ry Rocklen. The prize consists of a $10,000 unrestricted grant, a residency and an exhibition project, both in Ojai, California. The artist’s exhibition project, titled Pixievision, will be on view July 1 – September 4, 2018.

Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation Art Prize Gala will take place on Saturday, June 30 at a private residence in Ojai. Tickets are available starting at $150 and will include a cocktail reception, chef’s dinner, and award ceremony. The Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation is pleased to announce the exhibition project Ry Rocklen in Residence: Pixievision, curated by Frederick Janka, Executive Director. Ry Rocklen is the recipient of the 2018 Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation Art Prize. Ry Rocklen in Residence: Pixievision will be on view July 1 – September 4, 2018, with a free and public reception to celebrate the exhibition on Saturday, June 30. Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation is currently open Monday – Wednesday, 11:00am to 5:00pm, and by appointment. Admission is free.
