Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation is thrilled to announce a pop up presentation of paintings by San Antonio based artist Cruz Ortiz to benefit our newest initiative the Ojai Institute. Ortiz and Burnt Nopal conceived of the Ojai Institute’s member merchandise.

We are thrilled to offer two summer art making programs this year for the first time: a festive evening Drink and Draw for Adults and two, three-day Drawing Intensives for Youth. All programs are limited to 10 participants.
Drink & Draw for Adults
Thursdays in July and August, 5:00 – 7:00 pm
$100 per person ($80 for Ojai Institute Members)
Enjoy a summer evening drawing course for beginners and artists alike, with small bites and drinks included. Includes individual instruction in addition to group exercises, and all materials.

Drawing Intensives for Youth
July 15-17, Drawing from Nature

$200 per student, per session, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm each day
Students will explore the fundamental concepts of drawing, such as line, shape, value, texture, form, volume, spacial relationships, and perspective while working with a variety of drawing materials. They will develop works over multiple days. Includes individual instruction in addition to group exercises, all materials, and lunch. Scholarships available.
About our instructor:
Roy Grillo is a highly skilled artist in pencil and oil and has taught local elementary school students and adults for many years in the Ojai Valley. He was the Art Teacher for grades first through sixth at Mira Monte Elementary, and was also the Fine Arts Teacher for Ojai Valley School’s summer program. Roy teaches the necessary skills to create a finished work of art from the use of pencils to the study of other artists. His lessons will include a discussion, demonstration and then practice. However his focus is on mindset, encouraging the student to be mindful of their thoughts during the creative process and to remove negative beliefs and self judgement so they can be free to learn, focus and create unencumbered by self doubt.

My desire is to foster an atmosphere of joy so that the student creates art simply because they love it.
The Creative Community Thomas Fire Recovery Exhibition Closing Reception & Community Potluck on Friday, June 21, from 5:00 – 8:00 pm as part of the Ojai Village Merchant Group’s Third Friday Program. This event is free and open to the public.
Grant Applications for impacted artists will be available at the event, and online afterwards. Grants will range from $250 to $2,500.

Our intent with this exhibition is to match the initial funds of $41,290 provided to The Ventura County Arts Council by the National Endowment for the Arts and the California Arts Council, in order to increase the size and impact of the grants. This will be achieved in part by exhibiting art works with the support of Porch Gallery Ojai, at the Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation and make them available via a silent auction. The grant will be administered through the Ventura County Arts Council, with funds raised in Ojai earmarked for Ojai based artists who apply.

The Creative Community Thomas Fire Recovery Exhibition will take place at the Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation from May 17 – June 22, with an Opening Reception & Community Potluck on Friday, May 17, from 5:00 – 8:00 pm as part of the Ojai Village Merchant Group’s Third Friday Program. This event is free and open to the public.
In addition to the exhibition of artworks for the silent auction, two High School Seniors from Besant Hill School have elected to help produce the exhibition as part of their two week capstone final projects. Jamie Chen will be painting a series of 16 paintings of the Ojai landscape based on photographs given to her by members of the community, these paintings will then be given back to the person who provided the photograph. In her own words:
“I am wanting to embrace the idea of sharing spiritual connections between us and our lovely land, Ojai. My intention is to give back to this beautiful environment from exchanging some of your personal stories and connections with Ojai. As a student and artist, I always find our environment very inspirational, I hope by painting your stories I can present to the community a more complete and connected love to our land. Please submit your photos and stories of Ojai to pchen@besanthill.org, I will be painting the first 24 submissions.”
Shay Beckson will be designing and self-publishing an artist’s zine about her experiences after the fire and debris flow, which will also include works from the exhibition, along with a centerfold dedicated to her classmate Jamie’s painting project.
Public programming during the run of the show will feature art therapy activities lead by artist Edith Moses, a trained art therapist, a community round table discussion about the role of the artist in our community, as well as an additional Third Friday Community Potluck on Friday, June 21st, which will also serve as the closing reception. Silent Auction of artworks and experiences
On Saturday, June 29 the 2019 Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation Art Prize Gala will take place at a private residence in Ojai and will be an evening celebrating Kelly Akashi. The Art Prize Gala provides a critical financial support for efforts at the Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation including the Ojai Institute.
Kelly Akashi’s works have a gravitational pull that focuses on her innovative use of material and interest in both exploring and exposing the artistic process. She is constantly challenging assumptions of use, while creating incredibly smart and awe inspiring artworks. Living and working in Los Angeles, Akashi is represented by Ghebaly Gallery, where her most recent and critically acclaimed solo exhibition took place. Akashi’s first museum solo exhibition took place in 2017 at SculptureCenter, New York, and she was featured in the 2016 Made in LA Biennial: a, the, though, only at the Hammer Museum. Other institutions that have exhibited her works in major exhibitions include Musée d’Art Contemporain de Lyon, and Jewish Museum, New York. Her works reside in the collections of the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, and Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, among others.
The prize consists of a $10,000 unrestricted cash grant, an artist residency in Ojai, and a solo exhibition at the Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation. Kelly Akashi in Residence will be on view June 29 – Ongoing. The prize is awarded on an annual basis and the current focus is on supporting artists of merit living in Southern California with an interest in creating deeper engagement with the Ojai Valley community.
