Summer Art Classes for Adults & Youth

We are thrilled to offer two summer art making programs this year for the first time: a festive evening Drink and Draw for Adults and two, three-day Drawing Intensives for Youth. All programs are limited to 10 participants.

Drink & Draw for Adults
Thursdays in July and August, 5:00 – 7:00 pm
$100 per person ($80 for Ojai Institute Members)
Enjoy a summer evening drawing course for beginners and artists alike, with small bites and drinks included. Includes individual instruction in addition to group exercises, and all materials.

Drawing Intensives for Youth
July 15-17, Drawing from Nature
August 12-14, Drawing from Fantasy
$200 per student, per session, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm each day
Students will explore the fundamental concepts of drawing, such as line, shape, value, texture, form, volume, spacial relationships, and perspective while working with a variety of drawing materials. They will develop works over multiple days. Includes individual instruction in addition to group exercises, all materials, and lunch. Scholarships available.

About our instructor:
Roy Grillo is a highly skilled artist in pencil and oil and has taught local elementary school students and adults for many years in the Ojai Valley. He was the Art Teacher for grades first through sixth at Mira Monte Elementary, and was also the Fine Arts Teacher for Ojai Valley School’s summer program. Roy teaches the necessary skills to create a finished work of art from the use of pencils to the study of other artists. His lessons will include a discussion, demonstration and then practice. However his focus is on mindset, encouraging the student to be mindful of their thoughts during the creative process and to remove negative beliefs and self judgement so they can be free to learn, focus and create unencumbered by self doubt.

Creative Community Thomas Fire Recovery Exhibition Closing Reception & Community Potluck: Friday, June 21, 5-8 PM

The Creative Community Thomas Fire Recovery Exhibition Closing Reception & Community Potluck on Friday, June 21, from 5:00 – 8:00 pm as part of the Ojai Village Merchant Group’s Third Friday Program. This event is free and open to the public.

Grant Applications for impacted artists will be available at the event, and online afterwards. Grants will range from $250 to $2,500.

Creative Community Thomas Fire Recovery Exhibition: May 17 – June 22, 2019

The Creative Community Thomas Fire Recovery Exhibition will take place at the Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation from May 17 – June 22, with an Opening Reception & Community Potluck on Friday, May 17, from 5:00 – 8:00 pm as part of the Ojai Village Merchant Group’s Third Friday Program. This event is free and open to the public.

In addition to the exhibition of artworks for the silent auction, two High School Seniors from Besant Hill School have elected to help produce the exhibition as part of their two week capstone final projects. Jamie Chen will be painting a series of 16 paintings of the Ojai landscape based on photographs given to her by members of the community, these paintings will then be given back to the person who provided the photograph. In her own words:

“I am wanting to embrace the idea of sharing spiritual connections between us and our lovely land, Ojai. My intention is to give back to this beautiful environment from exchanging some of your personal stories and connections with Ojai. As a student and artist, I always find our environment very inspirational, I hope by painting your stories I can present to the community a more complete and connected love to our land. Please submit your photos and stories of Ojai to [email protected], I will be painting the first 24 submissions.”

Shay Beckson will be designing and self-publishing an artist’s zine about her experiences after the fire and debris flow, which will also include works from the exhibition, along with a centerfold dedicated to her classmate Jamie’s painting project.

Public programming during the run of the show will feature art therapy activities lead by artist Edith Moses, a trained art therapist, a community round table discussion about the role of the artist in our community, as well as an additional Third Friday Community Potluck on Friday, June 21st, which will also serve as the closing reception. Additional details to be announced shortly.

Silent Auction of artworks and experiences

On Saturday, June 29 the 2019 Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation Art Prize Gala will take place at a private residence in Ojai and will be an evening celebrating Kelly Akashi. The Art Prize Gala provides a critical financial support for efforts at the Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation including the Ojai Institute.

Kelly Akashi’s works have a gravitational pull that focuses on her innovative use of material and interest in both exploring and exposing the artistic process. She is constantly challenging assumptions of use, while creating incredibly smart and awe inspiring artworks. Living and working in Los Angeles, Akashi is represented by Ghebaly Gallery, where her most recent and critically acclaimed solo exhibition took place. Akashi’s first museum solo exhibition took place in 2017 at SculptureCenter, New York, and she was featured in the 2016 Made in LA Biennial: a, the, though, only at the Hammer Museum. Other institutions that have exhibited her works in major exhibitions include Musée d’Art Contemporain de Lyon, and Jewish Museum, New York. Her works reside in the collections of the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, and Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, among others.

The prize consists of a $10,000 unrestricted cash grant, an artist residency in Ojai, and a solo exhibition at the Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation. Kelly Akashi in Residence will be on view June 29 – Ongoing. The prize is awarded on an annual basis and the current focus is on supporting artists of merit living in Southern California with an interest in creating deeper engagement with the Ojai Valley community.

Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation Art Prize 2019: Kelly Akashi

Announcing the 2019 Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation Art Prize

Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation is pleased to announce that the recipient of the 2019 Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation Art Prize is Los Angeles based artist Kelly Akashi. The prize consists of a $10,000 unrestricted cash grant, an artist residency in Ojai, and a solo exhibition at the Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation. Previous prize recipients include Ry Rocklen (2018) and Rob Fischer (2017). The prize is awarded on an annual basis and the current focus is on supporting artists of merit living in Southern California with an interest in creating deeper engagement with the Ojai Valley community.

Akashi will be honored at the Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation Art Prize Gala on Saturday June 29, 2019 in Ojai, and the exhibition Kelly Akashi in Residence will be on view from June 29 – September 23, 2019. Click for more information about the Art Prize Gala and tables and tickets.

Akashi has exhibited nationally and internationally and was recently featured in the 2016 exhibition Made in LA Biennial at the Hammer Museum. Her most recent solo institutional exhibition Long Exposure at SculptureCenter in New York in 2017 was curated by Ruba Katrib. An excerpt from Katrib’s essay Kelly Akashi – In the middle: “Her works revel in micro interactions, spinning out through the various details and associations she can actualize within a tangible form. Akashi slows down and speeds up the processes of turning a material or an effect into a thing, creating a growing lexicon of inherent and internal material qualities.”

Frederick Janka, Executive Director, Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation, and curator of Kelly Akashi in Residence is currently working with the artist to develop her exhibition through multiple site visits to Ojai to meet creatives and makers that will inform the exhibition. Janka says: “Akashi’s works have a gravitational pull that focuses on her innovative use of material and interest in both exploring and exposing the artistic process. She is constantly challenging assumptions of use, while creating incredibly smart and awe inspiring artworks.”

Marc Swanson & Joe Mama-Nitzberg in Residence: February 23 – April 27, 2019

Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation is pleased to present the Ojai Institute’s inaugural Artist Residency with Marc Swanson and Joe Mama-Nitzberg, a two person exhibition project. The exhibition opens to the public on Saturday, February 23, with a conversation with the artists at 5:00 pm immediately followed by a reception. This event is free and open to the public. The exhibition will be on view through April 27, 2019.

Marc Swanson received his MFA from the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, in 2004. He has been on the board of Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture since 2011. He attended Skowhegan in 2000, and was faculty at Skowhegan in 2014. He is a contemporary American artist whose hand-made work brings together formal preoccupations and references to personal history and identity conflict. He works in a variety of media, including sculpture, drawing, video, photography, and complex installations. His work has been exhibited widely including The Whitney Museum of American Art, MOMA PS1, New Museum, CAMH Houston, Walker Art Center, ICA Boston, Tensta Konsthall and others. He is the recipient of a Pollock Krasner grant and will have a solo exhibition at MASS MOCA in 2021.

Joe Mama-Nitzberg lives and works in Catskill, New York. He received his MFA from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. He works in various forms and media including photography, video and collage. His work has been featured in exhibitions at Grant Wahlquist Gallery, Gallerie Catherine Bastide, Regina Rex, David Zwirner, Gavin Brown’s Enterprise, the Seattle Museum of Art, the Salzburger Kunstverein, the Renaissance Society, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (Denmark), and White Columns, among others. Mr. Mama-Nitzberg is a frequent contributor to Frog Magazine. His work is in the collection of the Walker Art Center and he is a recent recipient of an Art Matters Grant.

The Ojai Institute is an initiative of the Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation, and a new platform for engagement and learning that celebrates the unique vision of artists. At the heart of the Ojai Institute is an Artist in Residence program based in Ojai. The Ojai Institute also includes a student education program, an exhibition program, and an artist conversation series podcast. The Ojai Institute is committed to artists, and to free thought and dialog. All programs will be free and open to the public.

Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, was founded in 2015 by artists, family, and friends to celebrate the legacy of esteemed art patron and private art dealer Carolyn Glasoe Bailey. Currently based in Ojai, California, the organization is committed to supporting the arts and sciences, and educating the public about the importance of continuing support for the arts and sciences. Current initiatives include unrestricted cash grants for artists, funding for education initiatives, as well as a residency program in Ojai, consisting of a series of exhibition projects, public programs, and a podcast conversation series available on iTunes.

Surreal By Nature at Hotel Indigo Santa Barbara December 6, 2018 – May 5, 2019

Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation is pleased to announce an exciting new exhibition partnership with the Hotel Indigo Santa Barbara. Surreal By Nature opens to the public Thursday, December 6, 2018, and features artworks from the Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Study Collection augmented with a special selection of additional works. The exhibition is curated by Frederick Janka, Executive Director, and John Connelly, principal of JC Connelly, Inc and will be on view through May 5, 2019.

The exhibition is a hybrid model of public-private partnership between the Hotel Indigo Santa Barbara, the Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation, with the support of JC Connelly, Inc, and features artworks that focus on elements of nature (or nature-like elements) that appear abstracted, unearthly or transformed by the artists’ interaction and/or encounter with them. Of the Surreal By Nature exhibition, Daniel Alvarado, Hotel Indigo Santa Barbara’s General Manager, says, “Our hotel is excited to be partnering with the Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation to share unexpected art encounters with both locals and guests in the unique space of our hotel and to create a connection to our community that extends beyond our front door.”

About Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Study Collection:
The core of the Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation is a collection of sculpture, painting, photography, works on paper and editions inherited from the private collection of Carolyn Glasoe Bailey. Works included represent many of the artists she championed throughout her career as well as gifts by artists and supporters of the foundation in order to augment the collection in representative ways. The Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Study Collection is intended to be available for public exhibition with works loaned to art, education, and health focused institutions throughout the Tri-County region.

Leela Cyd: Conversation, Dinner – To Be Rescheduled!

 

 

Dear Friends,

In light of active wildfires and the numerous road and highway closures, we have decided to cancel our events this weekend with Leela Cyd. We will announce new dates shortly.

We are so incredibly grateful to the heroic first responders and tireless firefighters at the front lines. Our hearts are with those who have been impacted with loss, displacement, and trauma due to these recent events.

We strongly believe in the healing power of art and invite you to spend some quiet reflective time with us today. We will be here until 5:00 pm.

Each of these artists are actively pushing the boundaries of how an artist “should” use material, experimenting with self-defined modes of working, and creating innovative new art forms. Artists featured: Kelly Akashi, Yassi Mazandi, and Leela Cyd.
